Mine Survivor Outreach in Azerbaijan

The goal of this project is to provide the support needed for the psycho-social and socio-economic rehabilitation and reintegration of mine survivors in Azerbaijan.  The project will provide outreach services through trained and qualified fellow mine survivors who will visit survivors in their homes, develop one-on-one relationships with these individuals, and help formulate creative, personalized plans towards full reintegration.  The project will also include the establishment of a support centre where mine survivors can make contact during times of trouble and receive support and assistance from both peers and professionals.  By obtaining the tools and support they need, these mine survivors can be empowered to become fully-functioning, self-sufficient members of society who can live their lives with dignity and move beyond their traumatic past.

The project objectives are to help mine survivors obtain the following:

  • a social support network from others enduring similar situations
  • psychological support
  • vocational training
  • assistance securing a job
  • legal support and resources on legal rights
  • information on obtaining prosthetic and physical rehabilitation services
  • information about other organizations that can provide further help

An additional objective of the project is to develop and maintain an ongoing database of the needs of the mine survivors assisted through this project.  This will provide a more accurate picture of the nature of the needs of this population and the need for the future development of structures in Azerbaijan to meet these needs.

Lastly, the project aims to build the capacity of a core group of landmine survivors by providing training in the professional skills required to continue providing outreach support to mine survivors in future projects.  These individuals will be members of the Azerbaijan Landmine Victims Association, thus building the strength of this young organization, enabling it to function effectively and independently.
